There's no way something like this happened after a bunch of small problems. Looking back on the few instances in which things have been removed/censored from the site (The Slaying of Sandy Hook, or not allowing the n-word because it can affect search engine results) it's usually when external pressure puts the site at risk. In all my time here, Newgrounds has been a place where controversy and conflict are accepted as natural and healthy, and removing discourse is done as a last resort for self-preservation of the site.

What does bother me is the ambiguity of Tom's post. I've always appreciated the transparency we're given surrounding these kinds of things (especially compared to platforms like YouTube) and this feels like a step in the wrong direction.

If I offer to help you in a post, PM me to get it. I often forget to revisit threads.

believe it or not the godwin's law stuff wasn't as bad as it is elsewhere that has politics boards, it's just the nature of recent politics world wide

all things considered the politics board here was pretty tame

There's no amazing story or secret drama behind this decision, it has been over 20 years in the making. The drama in General this week only helped give it the final nudge it needed.

WELL that sucks, one of the reasons I found this place so appealing is the old internet vibes it has inclidung the BBS, especially the general section. I hope this isn't an indicator of further 'modernizing' the site and making it less and less interactive just when I settled in, like it's a sad and regrettable trend everywhere else on the internet. Discord, or any real time chat, isn't a viable replacement for forum discussion by virtue of being faster and things going out of sight much faster. It's sad to see forums become more and more obscure.

I don't know about the incidents and reasons behind the scenes for this decision but I hope it's warranted and not some shit like cushioning the site for wimpy twitter newcomers or to reduce controversial topics in order to attract investors or something like that.

Pretty much all my thoughts exactly. I'll admit I haven't been in General (and *especially* not Politics) for ages, but it's one of those things that you don't realize that you take for granted until it's gone. At least for me. For what it's worth, I doubt it has anything to do with attracting investors. I know this is going back a ways, but I want to say around 10 (maybe closer to 12) years ago, Tom got an offer for the site from an investor, under the condition they would get rid of some of the site's more controversial content, stuff like the Dead Baby Dress Up saga. I imagine it would've looked like when Kongregate got bought out by Gamestop. Anyway, Tom asked Newgrounds folks what they thought, and it was a resounding "no". The fact he even bothered consulting with the site - probably knowing their response ahead of time - goes a long way in showing his integrity. There's been plenty of evidence as to how NG just gets harder and harder to maintain as time goes on, even with sudden increases in popularity (i.e. Friday Night Funkin', Amogus). TL;DR - It sucks but it probably has more to do with a lack of resources than neutering the site for investors.

No, it isn't suspicious at all.

You clearly haven't seen the drama that unfolded these past couple of days. This isn't a prank too many people have started bullshit over petty situations and it caused more division and confusion than anything else.

What drama happened in general recently? I've just skimmed the board the last few days so I didn't notice anything especially noteworthy.

All of those could work, though the Audio forum seems more about discussing the creation of music than just talking about it casually. You could make the thread yourself if you're keen.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who has contributed positively to these forums over the years, however we feel these forums aren’t in line with the goals for the site and we don’t have the resources to handle the problems these forums create.

If you primarily used Newgrounds for these forums, now would be a good time to reach out to your friends and consider something like a Discord group to continue your conversations.

Some of these conversations might find a place in the remaining forums. For example, Jackho’s Reading Challenge thread could find a home in the Writing Forum or Clubs and Crews.

We aren't looking to recreate General and Politics in the remaining forums, however. If you are looking for a new place to argue about politics, we ask that you find it elsewhere. You’re welcome to post about issues that are important to you on your blog but a dedicated thunderdome doesn't belong here.

To get all the sad stuff covered in one post, I’ll also give notice that we are canceling our April Fools plans this year and will instead focus on ongoing projects.

Note: If you have set Custom preferences for the main forum list, you will continue to see the locked forums listed in red. To remove them from view, click the Customize button in the top right corner, then toggle their visibility off with that eyeball button to the right of each forum.

Yeah I really appreciate how well moderated this place is, especially compared to certain other places, so maybe things were much worse and I just didn't notice because of the fast response times of the mod team.

It just sucks to have the general/off-topic section disappear because forums like this are a huge part of what kept me here(and in other online communities in the past too, and I guess it holds true for many others aswell) because it's just a relaxing way to talk to interact online. I've seen too many online places and communities disappear or change into something sleek, modern and wholly unrecognizeable over the years so changes like that always make me wary.

I mean we really didn't do anything to "hide" any drama. Couple of guys got in a tizzy, deleted their own accounts and some fart huffers that had nothing to do with it at all wrote blog posts and harassed Tom about it even though Tom didn't do anything other than what the original drama llamas asked of him by deleting their accounts. By the time the horde of upset tweens were rallying behind these guys they had already chatted with Tom and left the site on their own with no intervention from any of the moderators.

I appreciate that I'm getting the credit for for ending General. I too love getting credit for stuff I had nothing to do with.

I'm sorry this story isn't very interesting with plot twists and secret back rooms where the mod mob seals the fates of lesser beings.

Yeah, I kinda think there must be another solution, the General forum was always a great place to just piss about, and post almost anything, within reason.

All the other areas are far too specific for just chatting shit. I can't turn up in Video Games talking about how I hurt my foot kicking a wall for example. I could take it to the private supporter forum, but then it doesn't have as large of an audience, so only a select few people will know about me hurting my foot by kicking a wall.

Of course I could use my blog more, but who the fuck wants to read my blog posts! I'm boring, atleast posting in a general forum, it kinda forces people to read about my foot being hurt because I kicked a wall.

It also kills the BBS Awards, which relied on the regulars of General, as it was a melting pot for everyone around Newgrounds.

I have no idea what kind of drama would happen that'd make closing the General board a good thing. I have a hard time believing that out of 20 years of dumb internet bullshit, whatever transpired was bad enough to close General, unless it was outright illegal.

Well the BBS awards can at least continue in the supportee forums. Althougb I definitley know the General closing is definitley gonna win event of the year

It wouldn't be the same, although to be fair, most of the nominees end up being supporters, it just wouldn't feel the same, as it excludes a large chunk of people innit.

True. Although the same large chunk of people were supporters to begin with anyway. Like I dont even know who on the BBS didnt have supporter status. I just dont want tradition to die out completely

I suppose I'd have to think about it closer to the time.

I know there's been alot of bullshit threads by a few usual suspects but maybe it'd been better to try something like restrict the number of threads a poster is able to post per month to make people put a bit more thought into whatever they post. Now that I think of it there's been quite a few people who just used the BBS like twitter or something and they just posted some random brainfarts that came to mind at the moment. Some sort of posting restriction might've improved on that.

HE SAID THUNDERDOME! HE SAID IT! MAD MAX REFERENCE!

in all seriousness, i think thats a good idea in regards to politics. A lot of the time serious internet discussion can devolve into name calling and doxxing (not on NG for the latter). Not saying that happens, its just very common on the net.

You've gotten a lot farther than you should have, but then you haven't met Frank Horrigan either. Your ride's over, mutie. Time to die.
